Hazel Stileman

Category of work:

Contemporary fine art, primarily found object and textile based.

Describe your work in one sentence:

I explore urban spaces, transforming objects by deconstructing form, reconstituting them, and archiving the everyday to reveal hidden meaning.

Why do you do it?

Life can be dull, and I think we ignore what surrounds us - to try and seek out the beauty or fun in the day-to-day is important, and romanticising the meaning behind discarded objects is one way to give life more beauty everyday. I hope to also translate the message of the importance of consuming less to create, and using what has been thrown away for a new purpose.

What keeps you going (what’s your GRIT)?

Making art is always something I keep coming back to, no matter where I am in life’s turbulences. Creating will always be a part of what I do!

What advice would you give to somebody wanting to become a ‘creative’?

Just go for opportunities, and apply for things that you think you might not get. Self doubt can stop us from achieving so much more than we think we might be capable of.

Tell us something unusual about yourself.

Used to do figure skating as a teen! Would definitely have kept it up if the ice rink didn’t shut down!
